Women on the Western Pennsylvania Frontier
The history books are full of stories about life on the frontier during the 1700s. They discuss life on the frontier during the French and Indian War, or a soldier’s life during the Revolutionary War, or the basic tasks of starting a homestead in an “untamed” land. However different the subject, one thing these stories have in common is that the main characters are usually men: the men who cleared the land and built the cabin, the men who enlisted and fought, the men who mad

President's Comments - March 2026
I am happy to report that the oral history program is coming together as Executive Director Jonathan Bogert and I start to work on how we envision the program and what we need to make that happen. We are busy pulling together a release form, a letter of welcome explaining the program, and learning what we need to do in order to make our oral histories usable by the Indiana University of Indiana’s Cultural Anthropology Department and History Department. I believe that there we

From the President's Desk - December 2025
As we wind down 2025, we, as a Society, need to look forward to 2026. 2025 showed steady growth in all the Society does. As we approach the new year, we need to prepare and plan for future growth. With all that the Society does—the programing, museum exhibits, fund raising, digitizing, public appearances—I foresee continued growth. My concern and HGSIC Director Jonathan Bogert’s concern is that we will not be prepared for that growth and that the Society could become overwh

The Tear Down Build Up Loop
It’s that time again, time to tear down an exhibit. While tear down seems like such a harsh thing to say, that appears to be the acceptable terminology for the act of removing an exhibit, putting the artifacts back into storage, and taking the signs down. This always seems to happen too soon, as it feels like the exhibit just went up last week rather than three months ago, and all that hard work and effort will be stacked away for the next time we run something similar.
