President's Comments - April 2026
As Winter fades into the oncoming Spring, the programs at the Historical & Genealogical Society of Indiana County (HGSIC) are beginning to pick up. Check out our website for all of our upcoming events. We average two programs a month. For most of the HGSIC events, there are no charges, but we do ask that you reserve a space, so we have a head count ahead of the event. There is a wide variety of topics that are covered. As I think back to what things I did as a kid growing up

From the Executive Directors Desk - April 2026
The Society was able to survive the rollercoaster of weather that hit Indiana during the month of March. Windstorms, warm spells, torrential downpours, and the occasional frost and snow battered both buildings throughout the month. Fortunately, our structures remain leak-free and in one piece. Next on the agenda are the seasonal April showers, which will test the new roof on the armory and the capabilities of our sump pumps. After a brief break for the Easter Holiday, the Soc

President's Comments - March 2026
I am happy to report that the oral history program is coming together as Executive Director Jonathan Bogert and I start to work on how we envision the program and what we need to make that happen. We are busy pulling together a release form, a letter of welcome explaining the program, and learning what we need to do in order to make our oral histories usable by the Indiana University of Indiana’s Cultural Anthropology Department and History Department. I believe that there we

The months of January and February were set aside to complete research for upcoming displays and programs as part of the “Spirit of America’s Semiquincentennial”. The committee took on the task of designing a display for the Gallery Wall, called “Prelude to Independence” which will feature national, state, and local events leading up to the signing of the Declaration o

From the President's Desk - December 2025
As we wind down 2025, we, as a Society, need to look forward to 2026. 2025 showed steady growth in all the Society does. As we approach the new year, we need to prepare and plan for future growth. With all that the Society does—the programing, museum exhibits, fund raising, digitizing, public appearances—I foresee continued growth. My concern and HGSIC Director Jonathan Bogert’s concern is that we will not be prepared for that growth and that the Society could become overwh

The Tear Down Build Up Loop
It’s that time again, time to tear down an exhibit. While tear down seems like such a harsh thing to say, that appears to be the acceptable terminology for the act of removing an exhibit, putting the artifacts back into storage, and taking the signs down. This always seems to happen too soon, as it feels like the exhibit just went up last week rather than three months ago, and all that hard work and effort will be stacked away for the next time we run something similar.
