As the remnants of winter slowly give way to spring, the Society is excited to share a packed schedule of events and important updates for the coming months. Many of these happenings are centered around the historic America 250 celebration and the Society's involvement. We also take a moment to welcome back our student volunteers and a new student work study who enhances our capacity to serve the community.
On March 26 at 6:30 p.m., the Society is hosting an award ceremony in conjunction with the Indiana County Tourist Bureau. We will be showcasing the work of local high school students featured in the Tourist Bureau's 2026 Annual Event Calendar. The contest invited students to submit works of art reflecting on the themes of patriotism, history, and civic pride. Winning pieces were selected by the Tourist Bureau based on creativity, quality, and relevance to the America 250 mission. The calendar commemorates the historic milestone, showcases young talent, and encourages students to engage with history and community pride. The artwork will be on display at the museum for much of March, all of April, and part of May.
To honor military service in Indiana County, a special event is scheduled for June 26, 2026 as part of the America250PA Indiana County celebration. The event will feature a patriotic program dedicated to veterans and service members, with a reception to follow. A special exhibit showcasing the six military branches will also be officially unveiled as part of the afternoon. A key part of the exhibit is a photo wall depicting military personnel from Indiana County. The Historical Society is inviting members of the community to submit photos for inclusion in the display. The goal is to include as many portraits of veterans and active service members as possible. This can also include family members or ancestors who served. For more information on the event, or to provide a photo for the wall, please contact the Society and we will be happy to assist you. All submitted photos will be scanned and promptly returned.
The Society is pleased to welcome new work study student, Anna Lill, who is now stationed at the front desk. Anna will be instrumental in greeting visitors, answering general inquiries, and assisting with day-to-day administrative tasks to ensure a smooth and welcoming experience for everyone who comes through our doors. The Society is also delighted to have Jacqueline Rock return for the current semester. Jacqueline is resuming her vital role in assisting with our ongoing cataloging efforts. Her experience and familiarity with our collection management system are invaluable as we continue to process and organize new acquisitions and ensure the accuracy and accessibility of our existing records.
The Society is excited to announce a series of visiting author programs next month, aligned with the America 250 celebration. Join historian Tom McMillan on April 14 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss his book, The Year That Made America: From Rebellion to Independence, 1775-1776. This work explores the pivotal seven months in 1776 that led to the Declaration of Independence. We also invite you to a special America250 event April 28 at 6:30 p.m. featuring Dr. Charles Cashdollar, a professor emeritus of history at UP. He will discuss his book, The IUP Story, which chronicles the history of Indiana University of Pennsylvania since its founding in 1875. Both programs will conclude with refreshments and a chance to meet the authors. Please RSVP for both events to assist with our planning.

Join the Society on Friday, April 17 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for Time Traveler Trivia!, a fun and challenging night of historical and general knowledge. Play as an individual or a team and test your knowledge across diverse categories, enjoy a lively social evening with fellow enthusiasts, and make new connections. Most importantly, your attendance directly supports the Society's mission. All proceeds fund upcoming educational initiatives, archival preservation, and public outreach. Mocktails and a taco bar are featured courtesy of the Homemade Restaurant. There will also be a special America 250 question in each round to commemorate the occasion. Tickets are $30, with a discount for Society members.
This March we highlight the vibrant activity at the Society, connecting us with our community and the historic America250 celebration. Please remember that the Easter holiday falls early this year, and that the Society will be closed Friday the 3rd and Saturday the 4th of April. This month is only the tip of the iceberg for an exciting year ahead. Join us as you are able and explore the area's rich heritage in a variety of ways.
