Step Back in Time: Experience a Victorian Garden Party!

The Indiana County Historical and Genealogical Society is thrilled to host its first-ever Victorian Garden Party! The historic Clark House will open its doors and grounds on Saturday June 14th, for an afternoon filled with engaging activities, delicious food, and entertaining games. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. This special event aims to raise vital funds for the continued preservation of the historic Clark House, ensuring its legacy for future generations.

The Clark family probably enjoyed many garden parties themselves, as they were fashionable and a popular alternative to evening gatherings. Even gentlemen seemed to prefer them! The Society hopes to revive this delightful Victorian tradition, beginning with an array of sweets and savories for ticketed guests, along with one complimentary alcoholic drink and access to a cash bar.

The Victorians were fascinated with magic, the occult, and spiritualism, so there will be an opportunity to receive an astrology reading, as well a tarot card reading. Since herbs were an essential part of Victorian life, a local herbalist will share insights into 19th century herbal uses.  Guests will also have the unique opportunity to experience topicals, a distinct tradition of Western and Central Pennsylvania. Flowers had special symbolism in Victorian culture; an accredited flower judge will demonstrate the art of creating a Victorian-era bouquet, highlighting a flower popular during that time.

Weather permitting, a cellist and a violinist will serenade guests on the mansion lawn before performing an enchanting set later in the grand parlor. Inside the parlor, a captivating storyteller will share tales, while outside in Memorial Park, guests can enjoy a leisurely game of croquet. The festive evening will culminate with a stunning historic dance demonstration. The ability to dance was considered an important accomplishment in the 1800s, and these performers are truly accomplished!

The Society eagerly anticipates the community joining us for this memorable event.  Imagine stepping back in time with a true Victorian mansion, surrounded by its manicured yard, enjoying a delightful selection of food, and participating in an assortment of activities - just as the Clark family and their guests once did. It promises to be an unforgettable glimpse into Indiana’s magnificent Gilded Age!
